From Möbius Loop to Polarization Standing Wave: A Tribute to Professor T. Itoh

报告摘要

From 2014 to 2018, I had the privilege to directly work with Professor T. Itoh at UCLA on microwave filter design, filter antenna, and polarization standing waves. Until Spring 2021, we have collaborated over multiple research topics, applied joint patents, and published many papers including one submitted two months before he passed away. This was a fruitful but rarely presented academic experience. In this seminar, I would dedicate my sincere tribute to Professor Itoh by reviewing some of our joint research, which started from a Möbius loop. It is found that the 3D Mobius loop ring resonator can be replaced by a 2D dual-mode bandpass filter. A further exploration developed a two-pole half-mode substrate integrated waveguide cavity-based filtering antenna. By using two coupled half-mode cavities in the patch antenna, we can implement beam steering on a single patch. In the end, a new initiation using the polarization standing wave (PSW) concept produces a new resonance phenomenon and resultant frequency configurable microwave devices.
